xcloner on domain, subdomains

Hello XCloners,

I searched for info on this topic but couldn't find any. Sorry if it's an old/obvious question.

We have three WP installations:

  • ikedabarry.com
  • ikedabarry.com/Kblog
  • ikedabarry.com/Ablog

We also have another domain, 341ontheriver.com, forwarded with masking to ikedabarry.com/341

This forwarding domain is also running WP with Xcloner.

Don't know if that's the best way to do it, but that's what we have.

Xcloner behaves well on the two sub-folder blogs (/Kblog and /Ablog) and backed up nicely the first time I tried it.

When we click Generate Backup using Xcloner on the root directory we get the following error message:

There was an error retrieving the JSON data from the server, try again or contact the developers!

Details: parsererror -- Invalid JSON: TAR error: Unable to open file 'stats/.statspwd' in binary read mode

Hi there, and welcome to the forums! To fix the error you have there simply exclude the stats/ folder.

Also, since I presume you will be including your subdomains in the backup, if they are present as subdirectories, you might want to exclude the backup folder from each of the XCloner installs there to avoid archiving the other backups.

Hope it helps! Ovidiu

Hmm… I posted a thank-you reply earlier today, but I don't see it. Sorry about that, Ovidiu. I appreciate your response.

I found out from the Manual how to exclude folders and the backup started. Then I got the following error. Re-tried, got the same.

Can you tell me what is going on and how to fix it?

I have set the Manual Backup to Yes in the Config options.

Thanks,

KIB

*edit: Just checked the administrator/backups folder and there are two .TAR files in there, one from each attempt to backup. Each is 1.9Gb, so that could be the whole site. It's more than the 55.4MB/9% in the error message. What's going on?

Seems pretty weird considering the estimate backup size is ~849MB.  Try and open the ikedabarry/html/administrator/backups/perm.txt file and checl between lines 500 and 600, do you notice any large files there?

Hi Ovidiu,

Yes, there were some large zipped files that I no longer need! I deleted these from lines 652-655:

SSdownloads/SS Sc 32 Microscope Mac.zip|0604|3441090|F
SSdownloads/SS Sc 32 Microscope.zip|0604|1865067|F
SSdownloads/SS - Sc123 Pumping Station.zip|0604|885566|F
SSdownloads/SS - Sc119 Pumping Station.zip|0604|882769|F

Is that the issue? Too many large files?

Those files don't look really big, try and set the "Files to process per request" option to 10 in your XCloner Config System Tab, as well as enable the XCloner log output there, and see how it goes!

Awesome, you might want to further adjust that request limit to a larger number if you don't get anymore issues, might decrease the backup creation time!

I'll work with it and find out what the optimum number is, although the process was quite fast. I'm also reducing the large files on the server. Turns out I had some big zipped files (for clients to download) that I no longer needed. Thanks again!
