I was able to successfully transfer a backup file from my development server to my client's server, but I immediately received the "unable to connect to mySQL database" error when attempting to view the live site.

After taking look at the configuration.php settings at the new location, I see that all of the values pertain to the old location.

i.e.  var $db = 'old_databasename';  should have been changed to  var $db = 'new_databasename';

Isn't the XCloner script supposed to configure everything automatically?

Hi Yuan, yes, XCloner usually updates the configuration.php file automatically, did you get any errors related to it when restoring? Did you use the ftp or "Install files directly" options when restoring? Also, try and use an empty restore directory to track the files restore process.

Hi,

I did not receive any errors during the restore process.

I used the "Install files directly" option.

Do the permissions for the destination directory need to be 777, or is 755 okay?

Thanks for the quick response!

As long as the server user running the script can write to that folder, 755 permissions are ok also.

Can you tell us what permissions does your configuration.php file had after restore? If it became unwriteable when restoring, that might have been the restore why the update might have failed.
