JSON Error - Not Fixed by Changing Refresh Mode

I'm getting the same JSON Error reported by other users ("There was an error retrieving JSON data from the server…"), but changing the Refresh Mode setting to Normal causes a different error ("Internal Server Error" — and there is nothing in the server logs to suggest what this might be). The Compress Backup Files setting is also off as recommended and all other settings are default. I have not been able to complete a backup yet. Thoughts?

Could you post here the full error message with the JSON? I am guessing the backup process might be stopping when trying to archive large files, try and see if you can exclude those.

The backup stalls during the db backup everytime (always after the 5th table). Here is the full error:

There was an error retrieving the JSON data from the server, try again or contact the developers!

Details: error -- undefined

JSON url: index2.php?task=recurse_database&nohtml=1&dbbackup_comp=&dbbackup_drop=&startAtLine=7&startAtRecord=450000&dumpfile=/home/content/62/3966862/html/administrator/backups/database-sql.sql

Are you storing binary data in your mysql database like large files? If so, try exclusing that table to see if it helps! Otherwise you can try and use the mysqldump option checked with refresh mode set to Normal, or try and increase the execution time for your website.

I'm not aware of any binary data being stored. It is a standard Joomla install with a few plugins.

I did try excluding the 5th and 6th tables to see if that would change anything, but the backup still got stuck at table 5. Not sure what that means? Should I try something else?

Side note: I was able to successfully run a backup by excluding the database.

In Xcloner Config System tab there is an option to decrease the queries processed per backup step, try and adjust that number to a smaller value and see if it helps!

I reduced the "Database records per request" from 10000 to 2000, but still had it get stuck on table 5. Was that the setting you were referring to?

Yes, that was the setting. If you like, feel free to open  a support ticket and i can take a more direct look at  the issue to see why it stops there.

Hi Ovidiu,

After some investigation, I found that it was the jos_bannertrack table that it was getting stuck on. This table is huge if you don't purge it occasionally, but once I did, the database part started working fine.

Now the backup seems to be getting stuck during the file process with the following error:

------------------------------------------------------------

There was an error retrieving the JSON data from the server, try again or contact the developers!

Details: error -- undefined
JSON url: index2.php?task=recurse_files&mode=&nohtml=1
------------------------------------------------------------

If I set the refresh mode to normal, I get an Internal Server Error.

Any thoughts? Thanks again for your help.

Another note: I've tried setting up a few cron jobs. The one that include a full backup (files + db) and the files-only backup both result in 500 internal server errors. The db-only one runs fine.
