I have been experimenting with cron automation of backups and find it odd that a manul backup and a cron backup taken within a couple of minutes of each other without any changes have different file sizes, eg. on a site with a backup of a site with a compressed size of 20.5mb the cron backup is 20.4mb.

I haven't tried this on a larger backup so I do not know if the difference will be massive or minimal still.

Is there a reason for this?

The difference would be in how the data in being written to the archive, for the manual backup option an incremental mode is used which could lead to having more file pointers inside the created archive, however there isn't any differenc in the data contained, both backups should be fine!
