It makes sense to me that it would be best to put a Joomla site offline (in maintenance mode) when doing an Xcloner backup, but I don't see this recommendation anywhere on this Xcloner site or in this forum.

Is putting the site offline NOT necessary or useful?

Usually for small sites there is no need to do that, but you can do it if you like, it won't affect XCloner backup process.
