I have been trying to backup my entire site with XCloner, but it keeps on encountering failure.
The error that I got is as follows:
Initializing backup...
Backup /home/sclorg/public_html/administrator/backups/[email protected] created, we may continue!
Database backup...
Filesystem backup...
Scanning files system... done! (Estimated size:1227.26MB) in 20635 files
There was an error retrieving the JSON data from the server, try again or contact the developers!

I tried to just backup all the database tables without the files, it worked.
Then tried to solely backup the files, it would not work. Same error keeps on popping up.
Someone please advise why this is occuring, because I need to clone the site and move to somewhere to test out some upgrades.

The issue you have seems to be related to a timeout issue from your server, XCloner probably tries to archive some large files and the server times out at some point.
I would advise excluding some of the large files from your site and see if it helps, look in administrator/backups/perm.txt after line 240 and see if you spot any...
You can also try to further decrease the "Files to process per session" option to see if it helps.
