Too many symbolic links makes it go boom|Old Forum|Forum Archive|XCloner

So when running JoomlaCloner to backup my site, I have a subdirectory of static content which has many symbolic links..

When I tell JoomlaCloner to ignore this subdirectory, it only ignores the directory, it still traverses inside this directory and with the level of symbolic links in there it just cannot handle it and won't make a backup.

To make a backup, I physically had to move the directory during backup and move it back afterwards... otherwise I'd be making 10's of thousands of "ignore this file/directory" in the JoomlaCloner config...

My question is this: Why when I tell it to ignore a directory, does it not actually ignore it? And if it can't, any way to make it ignore symbolic links?
