Ok,
I've been through this clone business quite a few times now - learned a lot, and have gotten it to the point where the database transfers over and all the files transfer over without issue.
Where I run into issues is that it will not update the configuration.php file (even when it indicates that it has), and the clone is unable to connect to the new database correctly.
After an apparently successful clone, the configuration.php still has old information in terms of paths and database. When I manually go in and edit these lines to reflect the new paths and database, when I try to load up the site I get a Joomla system error indicating that it cannot access the database...
Any thoughts as to where I begin?

Hmm , i presume the message you get after restore say that the configuration file was updated successfully?
If so, open a support ticket and send us your ftp+mysql details to one of your restore sites to check the issue
Note: you should use XCloner restore only for the Joomla 1.5.x system, for Joomla 1.0.x systems use the JoomlaCloner restore script
