The title pretty much says it all. I am moving my sites from one package on 1and1 to a different package. I am backing up and restoring to a subdirectory on the new package, and once that is done I will have them move the domain name from the old to the new, and I was planning on then making the simple change in general settings to point back to the original domain name not the sub directory.

All goes well, except in Gerneral Settings the Wordpress URL settings are greyed out and I cannot change them. Can this be worked around or changed? Or do I need to change the sequence of my steps.

I'm doing it this way because I have about 10 WP sites in sub domains attached to the domain name and it would avoid downtime doing it this way.

In case I'm not clear and rambling, here's the example. I have the domain mysite.com. I have wp blogs like: wp1.mysite.com, wp2.mysite.com etc.

I'm restoring to an url like: mynewsite.com/wp1, mynewsite.com/wp2, etc. Once I get all 10 backed up and restored, I will have 1and1 support move the mysite.com domain name to the news package. Then I would simply have to change the url in General settings back to: wp1.mysite.com, wp2.mysite.com etc. And in theory all will then be back to normal.

I'm wondering why I cannot change the url setting in General Settings in Wordpress after the restore. Kind of stops my process.

Help??

The urls can't be changed as they have been manually setup by XCloner in the wp-config.php file, you can either change them there or remove the lines containing them, the former option will allow you to edit them from your site backend.

Hope it helps!

Thanks for the reply.

I removed the lines and got 404 errors until I went and resaved my permalinks. I didn't change anything,, just had to hit save and it started working correctly. I do use a custom permalink structure, nothing fancy: /%category%/%postname%/.

When I resore the sites I have to do that also or no pages come up except the home page.

Not a big issue, but I'm glad I figured that one out without too much trouble. AND I can edit the url fields again.

Thanks again

Actually, it's not working.

When I delete those 2 lines, everything redirects to the original site still………

I guess that won't be an issue once the domain names get switched over……

Make sure you update as well the wp_options table(through phpmyadmin), you will find references to the old site there on two records!
