hi ovidiu,

currently i am testing the xcloner plugin for a wordpress installation.

the following problem occurs:

the backups vary in size between 470MB to 3500MB (capped by 2048MB file size limit in this case), where ~495MB should be the size.

usually the backup start at low size and keep increasing in size until it wants to backup 3500MB and then i drops back to a lower size again.

i excluded the backup store folder in the cron-jobs config, to make sure existing backups are not backed up. anyways, in that case, i beleive the backup-size should always be a multiple of the correct size, which is not the case. (for instance, at the moment the size is 689MB) ....

until now i did not analize the contents of different backups.

maybe you know this behavior and can lead me how to solve the problem the fastest way.

thanks in advance,

arthur

HI Arthur, that is a pretty weird behavious, usually it only increases in size when files are being added of that size, you can easily check this by opening the administrator/backups/perm.txt in Excel(fields separated by |), file is located inside the created backup archive, and order it after the third column, you should see there the files with larger size.

Could you post here a screenshot after your backup process(during and when finished)?

Regards, Ovidiu

hi ovidiu,

concerning the file perm.txt: is it inside the backups, in folder administrator/backups/ , or should it be in the filesystem outside? because i can not find it in the filesystem outside. in the first case, can you tell me the exact tar-command to extract the file (i would use ssh/putty to the server, cause i dont want to download 1.8 GB)?

and a screenshot of what xcloner did overnight:

thanks,

arthur

The perm.txt file is inside the created backup archive, try and check this tutorial http://www.cyberciti.....files/ on how to extract only that!

I just wanted to chime in and say that I've been using xCloner for several years now and that I too experience strage behavior in backup file sizes. One day it will be 180MB and the next it will be far smaller - I've downloaded the backups and can't really see any difference in file structures - it just seems there is something going wonky when the CRON runs. It's very erratic and I've not been able to find anything consistent over 40+ websites using xCloner. I would love if there was some answer to the question 🙂

I will answer your question with another few questions, sorry for this, but i need to understand how you have your setup there:

1. are you running multiple crons at the same time for the same site?

2. are you sharing the backup store folder between multiple sites?

3. when reading the cronlog output, do you see any error messages? usually if a backup is completed correctly you should get a full log output with the details

4. if you like, please download filezilla, it has a nice function called "Directory comparison" in the View menu, you can download 2 backups from the same site, extract and compare their directory structure

5. all file names included in a backup, are stored first inside the administrator/backups/perm.txt file, which is also inside the backup, might want to check the number of files(lines) it contains

And as always, i can be of more service helping you debug this issue through the Support system! Ovidiu

hi ovidiu!

i slapped my forehead after discovering what most likely was the cause in my case: another backup plugin i tested closely before. i forgot to deactivate/delete it. it was still generating backups, including xcloner backups and xcloner was generating backups including the folders with backups of the other plugin. ....

thanks for your advice to compare the perm.txt. there i discovered the cause.

i'll give xcloner another few days of test run. but i think this prob is solved.

thanks very much,

arthur
