I had successfully logged in with admin/admin, and changed the username to "instructor" and I don't know what I made the password. When I was unable to get in, I followed the instructions and changed the config file, substituting my new password as instructed. I still can;t get in! I am not entirely sure what the username is, although as I said, I noted down "instructor". What should I do?

I had exactly the same problem. Turned out that only the first 3 characters of the user name are saved on the setup screen. When you next attempt to login, using the full username that you entered, you are rejected. But if you enter just the first 3 characters of the username that you entered, and then it works.
The truncated user name can be seen on line 5 of cloner.config.php, however changing it there does not appear to make any difference.
Hi Toasty! As as far i checked, on line 5 in the cloner.config.php file, the saved details are referring to the mysql username and not the login, the login variable is marked with jcuser
And i just rechecked here, there is no size limitation when changing that username! Anyway, if you still have issue, please post some screenshots with the issue to see what exactly happens.

Ovidiu,
Thank you for your rapid response to my post. I am sorry about the confusion regarding the login variable for the user name. I am seeing jcuser on line 5, and the Mysql user name on line 8. I was refering to jcuser. I am using the WordPress plugin, in WordPress 3.0.5 and the PHP version is 5.2.15.
I have been playing around with the situation for some time today and find that it is far more complex than I stated. I can obtain different results with different words, and character/keyboard symbol combinations. I can login with some long names, and if fact Andrews "instructor" works fine for me.
As an example of a problem name:
If I use a username of "Coastal" it works. However, if I substitute keyboard symbols (incontrast to extended characters) and change the name to "Co@$tal" it does not work, nor does any length variant work. If I shorten the name by one character to "Co@$ta" it still does not work, but if I enter just the 1st three characters ("Co@") it does work. Once I am in, if I look at the Authentician tab, under settings I see:
[Image Can Not Be Found][Image Can Not Be Found][Image Can Not Be Found][Image Can Not Be Found]
with the username truncated from 6 characters to 3. In this case, the jcuser value in cloner.config.php was not altered, but in other cases it is. In fact I can enter certain 6 character user names in jcuser, save the file, reopen in to find that entered value has been truncated to 3 characters. And, the 3 characters are a perfectly workable user name. On the other hand, entering "Co@$tal" in the cloner.config.php file locks me out of Xcloner until I re-edit the file and shorten it to "Co@$ta", at which point "Co@" becomes a functional password but the jcuser value remains the full 5 characters. Additional shortening of this particular name again locks me out of Xcloner – it has to be exactly 5 characters, and then, and only then, will the 3 character truncation work.
However, as I tried different words, I got somewhat different results. But the bottom line seems to be that keyboard symbols (I have tried from ! to *) cause erratic results in the user name. The one thing that consistently worked for me when locked out, was resetting the jcuser value (to admin) always worked for me, and was far easier than reinstalling Xcloner.
Hope that this is of some assistance to you!

Ovidiu,
I installed the update, and you nailed the username
problem! I have tried a number of names
including keyboard symbols, and all have worked. No truncation in the jcuser value.
However, I can no longer complete a compressed backup,
which I could before (a .tar, uncompressed backup works, but a .tgz does not).
The .tgz backups that I made yesterday completed without any difficulty,
and the only change that has been made
to the site is today’s reinstallation of updated Xcloner. This particular site is not a large one, the
backup file should be in the neighborhood of 25mb.
Jim
