I'm about to move my WP site to another hosting account. What are the best steps to take?

When should I change the name servers?

Which method shall I use? CLONE or MOVE?

I've tried this path: CLONED my site. Created the database on the new server. Now I'm afraid to delete the current name servers and give the new ones. What if something goes wrong? How can I access my present site and retry?

The tar.php, Xcloner.php and the backup.....tar are in place waiting for launch.

Best way to go would be like this:

1. use Clone to move the backup archive and restore script to the new location

2. do not switch DNS of the domain yet, however use your local hosts file as indicated here https://www.xcloner......ching-dns/ and point locally the domain to the new location

3. start the restore process as indicated in the restore wiki

4. if all worked correctly, switch the main domain DNS

Thank you for this piece of advice. I added the IP address and my website's name to the hosts file.

I cleaned the cache, reloaded the page and I was directed to the new site. However, when I started the process (xcloner.php) after a couple of seconds (at 0.29%) I was given this warning message:

"The database details provided are incorrect and/or empty. Unable to connect to mysql server"

The wp-admin folder was extracted nothing else.

I already have a database and checked the information for user, password, localhost, server. The database is empty. Should I populate it? What does the installer need in the database?

Perhaps the structure of the two databases (the old one at my present hosting account and the new at my new hosting account) are different. But I've successfully cloned several WP sites for practice - to different domain names but mostly to this new hosting account. So the different settings shouldn't be a problem. This is the first time I'm cloning to the same domain name and now it is for real, not a practice.

Try changing your new mysql password so it doesn't contain any special characters and see if it helps, restart the restore process with the new pass.

Thank you. Changing the password was successful. My previos password contained these characters: &*;%

Everything works fine, now I only have to change the name servers.
