Have you checked if the firewall from your server might be causing the upload issues? If it's a shared server, you might need to ask your hosting support to look into this. Same goes for the dns thing i indicated in my previous post.
If you run this php code on your server
<?php echo gethostbyname("s3.amazonaws.com"); ?>
do you get an ip address?
The issue you have is clearly related to curl and how it's being processes on the original server, so your best bet to fix the issue is your hosting support!
Also, the original developer of the amazon S3 class can be reached here http://undesigned.or.....hp-class , there might be somebody on that list that could help you faster.

Got it, so the communication with amazon works, the only thing failing is the actual curl file upload.
The s3 class uses these standard curl directives to send the data over CURLOPT_INFILE and CURLOPT_INFILESIZE over CURLOPT_PUT, what is the size of the backup archive you are trying to send? Try and see if a smaller backup (like a database only type) has the same upload issue.
If it still fails, i am afraid it's an issue from your curl installation on your server which you will need to debug with your hosting support.
