I just tried setting up Xcloner 3.0.3 for Wordpress 3.1.2 to auto-backup to my Amazon S3 account using a cron job in my Hostgator cpanel.

I received a log via email, with the following error messages:

Any suggestions?

Please note that I am total newbie when it comes to coding.  Honestly, I am hesitant to even use xcloner because the configuration is pretty intimidating for me, and I barely even know how to use the cpanel.  I've installed two other plugins—PressBackup and Updraft—that backup my wordpress site to my Amazon S3 account, and they both much simpler to configure.  However, they create backup archives that are about 15MB, while Xcloner creates a backup that's about 150MB, so I'm guessing that the Xcloner backup is more complete.  Is that right?

Pressbackup and Updraft both backup: database, themes, plugins, and uploads.  Is there anything else that Xcloner backs up that could make Xcloner more helpful to me in the event that I have to restore from scratch?

If so, maybe it's worth the extra effort getting Xcloner to work.  If not, perhaps I should just go with one of the simpler plugins.  Thoughts?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi there! Try and Activate the amazon SSL mode from your XCloner Config->Cron tab and see if it helps! It could be a misscommunication betweeen servers also, so try and make several requests and see if it helps.

Regarding the backup size, XCloner pretty much backups all files from your site root(Backup Start path) and the full database, so the 150MB size should match those. Probably it included the other backups you have there some the other plugins, might want to exclude those also.

We try and make XCloner as flexible as possible, however usually the default values should work without problems in generating /restoring a backup.

Regards, Ovidiu

Hi Ovidiu.  Thanks for your help.  I tried what you suggested—activating amazon SSL and making several requests, throughout the day today—and, unfortuately, I'm still getting the exact same error messages.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Also, thanks for explaining how XCloner differs from the other plugins I mentioned.  Could you please explain that a little more?  In the event that my host's server were to die and I were to lose my entire website, are there important files that XCloner backs up that other plugins (such as Pressbackup and Updraft, which back up the database, themes, plugins, and uploads) don't?  If so, what are the important files that XCloner backs up that these other plugins don't?

Thanks again, Damian

Ok, here is something else you can try:

1. create a test site on another server and try to start the amazon S3 cron transfer from there and see if you get the same error

2. if you like, send me an email with your amazon keys and i will make a test from here with a small backup

Regarding the backup, as mentioned above, XCloner does not backup parts of your site, it archives ALL your site files no matter which plugins you have there installed, so in case of recovery, you will be able to retrieve any file/database data from your original site.

Hi Paul, could yout post here screenshot after your XCloner Config first tab as well as the cron tab with amazon and ftp settings? leave out the connection details as those are sensitive.

One hint, for the ftp connect error, use only the server ip address as ftp server name.
