When I go to
"View Backups" –> then select a backup –> "Clone" –> then insert all FTP credentials –> "Continue"
I get a
Request Timeout
I tried incremental and non-incremental and Ajax and non-Ajax, but only a few Megabytes are transferred to the destination server before the the error message appears and the transfer is stopped.
The backup file to be transferred (*.tgz) is approx. 60 MB.
Please advise.

Try following this alternative restore option /wiki/index.php/Restore_Backup#Restore_Backup_.E2.80.93_Manually , the timeout you get there might be caused by your server firewall.

I know that I can transfer the backup files manually.
But my point was that the "CLONE" function doesn't work because it transfers only some % of the backup before failing due to a timeout.

The Clone function is very much dependent on the system limitations, so try checking with your hosting support to see if they can increase that timeout... also check the disk space available on the new host...
