Try and open the administrator/backups/perm.txt file and check in the end, is there a large folder that could be causing the backup mode to timeout? try and exclude that and see if it helps! Also, if you have a .htaccess file present, make sure the rewrite mode is disabled for the xcloner plugins folder, or update the rules to this http://t.co/1hpe34y5

If you can setup a cronjob, i would advise to try and use the php executable cron command, like "php /home/.../pathto/cloner.cron.php" and see if you have anymore issues with that.

I checked the perm.txt file and it looked like it was ending in the images folder, which did have some big files. But when I excluded that, it ended in a much smaller folder with no big files, so I'm not sure that was the problem. (Note that even before that it seemed to die at different points in the process.)

Then I tried adding the following to the .htaccess file, but it didn't fix anything:

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/administrator/components/com_xcloner-backupandrestore/ [NC]
RewriteRule . - [S=30]
Is there an error log I can check?

K, so just to be clear, when excluding the images/ folder, did you get a backup completed? It seems the issues you have are caused by the hosting server which is either set to timeout at a small time limit or it's simply too slow, you might want to check with your hosting support also to see if they can increase that limit.

No, the backup didn't complete when I excluded the images folder. It just died at another point.

Is there something specific I can ask my hosting provider to change?

You can simply ask them to check the script and increase the timeout limit that prevents the script from finishing it's tasks
